5 Top Tips for Handling a Trip to A&E With A Baby

A&E with a Baby is not a fun place to be. Cue copious amounts of stress, tears and uncertainty. Plus an uncomfortable seat and a long wait. Here are five helpful tips for how to make the ordeal, slightly less of an ordeal.

1. Bring a bag of essentials

You might be waiting for a while, or even facing an overnight stay. Pack your toothbrushes, something for baby to sleep in and a change of T-shirt. Save money on overpriced kiosk food and pack some snacks too! (I strongly suggest including chocolate).

2. Don’t try and guess the outcome of your visit

Whether it’s an injury or illness that’s brought you to A&E, don’t drive yourself potty thinking the worst. You won’t know until you know. So don’t waste valuable energy fretting during your wait.

3. Have a chat with another parent

If they don’t look too stressed, try and strike up a conversation with someone else who’s in the same position as you. It’ll make the time go quicker and might cheer you both up a bit, even if only temporarily.

4. Play a game

Even if your little one isn’t feeling great, you’d be surprised at how they can still be up for a bit of playtime. Try them with a little peekaboo or hand them a toy. For older kids, the busy environment makes a great setting for a game of I Spy.

5. Speak up

If something is bothering you, don’t keep it to yourself. Think your child’s getting worse? Have a suspicion that you’ve been forgotten? Tell a staff member – they’re there to help. If you’re worried about distracting them from their job, try to go to the A&E reception desk rather than grabbing someone who’s rushing past.
