How to Make Christmas Merry for Your Toddler

This year will be my second Christmas with my Son, I can’t believe how time flies! Last year he was still so young that he wasn’t even sitting up, let alone participating in the festivities. We put a reindeer bib on him and lay him on a rug under the tree so he could look at the twinkling lights. That was about it as far as his enjoyment of the period! Now he’ll be nearly 17 months old when Christmas comes, and it’s a bit of a funny age for a seasonal holiday. How do you do Christmas for a toddler?? Too young to understand the concept of ‘Santa’, but old enough to destroy the tree and rip open the presents – eek!

So, how do you make Christmas age-appropriate for a 1-2 year old toddler?

A fun activity that a little one will love would be to make a simple Christmas Post Box! Even if the concept is a little lost on them, toddlers really enjoy the action of posting things through a slot. It’s easy to set up and they can even have a little go at ‘writing a letter’ to Father Christmas.

Choosing Christmas gifts that they will love is easy when you know this simple piece of information; Between 18-24 months toddlers really get into “pretend” play. Therefore, choosing toys that have a role-play element will ensure that their gifts will be a big hit for your toddler! On Christmas day, and the months after! To make it a double tick for your tiny human, make it a wooden gift. [see my post 5 Surprising Ways That Wooden Toys Benefit Your Child]. A wooden kitchen or a little cleaning set make cute gifts and fulfil a toddlers desire to copy the adults around them.

Four great Christmas books to read with your toddler:

Fun lift the flap book, Dear Santa By Rodd Campbell
Another lift the flap delight, A Christmas Bear by Ian Whybrow
Touchy feely book, That’s not my Santa…
Push and pull book (my son’s favourite!) My Magical Snowman

Christmas really is a time for children, a time for love, family and also charity. While you spend time making a very merry Christmas for your little one, I’d like to ask a humble favour. If you are able to spare anything this year, only £2 could buy antibiotics for a child in need. Save the Children are doing amazing work to treat children suffering from illness and poverty. Spread the love this Christmas and please consider donating if you can!
